NOTE: In a letter dated February 23, 1979, Mr. Temme received his last letter from former SLA American prisoner and Hearst newspaper heiress Patricia Hearst, it reads:
February 23, 1979
Dear Mr. Temme:
Thank you for your letter of support and encouragement. As you know, because of the efforts of many people and the courage of President Jimmy Carter, my sentence has been commuted and I have been released from prison.
I will "always" believe that this would not have been possible without the support of people such as you.
Sincerely,
Patricia Hearst
Author's Comments:
"My relationship with Patricia Hearst, who was kidnapped and 'unwillingly' connected with the infamous S.L.A. gang in the 1970s, was only by letter correspondence while she was incarcerated and serving her time at the Pleasanton Correctional Prison in California." Mr. Temme further states about Ms. Hearst, "At that time in our lives, (1970s) we both were going through difficult times, our friendship was unique, she's a classy lady inside and outside." According to Mr. Temme, "Her only fault, was wanting to survive and live"...
According to Ms. Hearst's priest, the Reverend Father Ted Dumke her priest, Mr. Temme's correspondence with Ms. Hearst was instrumental in Ms. Hearst's eventual recoverey.
In November 1978 Congressman Leo Ryan, who was a friend of Ms. Hearst, was assassinated.
Representative Leo Ryan was in Guyana gathering information for a congressional subcommittee on the Peoples Temple Church, a known cult church in Jonestown, Guyana, when Mr. Ryan was assassinated by Reverend Jim Jones the cult leader and his followers that Thanksgiving Week, in November of 1978.
Congressman Ryan had previously visited Ms. Hearst in prison on numerous occasions, he became the driving force in acquiring her eventual release in early 1979, in a commuted sentence by then President Jimmy Carter. Representative Leo Ryan of California already knew about prison: as he had spent eight days disguised as a convict in Folsom Prison in 1970 to gather information for a congressional subcommittee.
Father Ted Dumke a friend of the Hearst family, had also visited Ms. Hearst in prison on numerous occasions, and in a "known letter" credited Mr. Temme with helping Ms. Hearst through her "darkest time" in prison. Mr. Temme to date, has never given any interviews on the topic of Ms. Hearst.
